Who doesn't want to be an all-rounder or even a crossover? Station wagons, SUVs and vans vie for the art of everyone. One of the best all-rounders is the 320d Touring - no one needs more BMW.

Sure, there are families with more than two children. It should be a bit tight for you in the not exactly generously dimensioned 3-seater rear. Then there are the mountain people who don't want to do without all-wheel drive, especially in the cold season. The 3 Series Touring is also available with xDrive - unfortunately not with the volume diesel. Comes on the wish list for 2007 - maybe Bayern will understand.

An expensive weakness

Like its equally successful predecessor, the BMW hardly allows itself to be weak. If only it weren't for the meager standard equipment that brings tears to the eyes of family men and company drivers alike. It's hard to believe how bare a 3-series BMW in 2007, which is at least 30,109 euros expensive, is equipped. The Bavarians pay dearly for every detail, no matter how sensible, and thus reduce the price of the 3 Series BMW to spheres that a few years ago still made you dream of the 5 and 7 Series.

But there is a magnificent all-rounder with enough space, good performance and a lot of built-in driving fun. Because this is exactly where the BMW really hits. Volume diesel or not - some enjoy a leisurely drive on a winter holiday with hours of motorway passages. Others are happy about the chassis, which is still unparalleled in the middle class. Successful models such as the Mercedes C-Class and the Audi A4 are on par with the 3 Series and offer the occupants more comfort. But this kind of sporty driving behavior is currently only available from Munich thanks to the tight spring-damper coordination. The steering works extremely precisely; the steering behavior without any driving force is exemplary.

The dynamic appearance is mandatory in a 3 Series BMW - regardless of whether you are behind the wheel of a sedan, coupe or touring. To get the look right, however, you can hardly avoid a wide tire wheel set. With the standard 16-inch wheelset with emergency running properties, the family express looks quite tired, as the small wheels are all too lost in the bulky wheel arches. But despite all the sportiness, an all-rounder must also be able to score points in practice.

A decent trunk is all the more important. If you open the tailgate of the 3 Series Touring, you have just 460 liters of storage space. Thanks to a payload of 540 kilograms, that's enough for everyday transport. And if you want a little more, the ski hatch or the split folding down of the rear seat will help. This was done within a few seconds by pressing a button. Then there is enough space for the roof battens from the hardware store or the beverage crates for the next party. There is a storage compartment under the loading floor for small items. Overall, the rear compartment can be increased to 1385 liters if required. Still practical: the rear window can be opened separately.

The interior has the current BMW look. Many long for the cockpits of the 80s and 90s that were inclined towards the driver. It's a shame that BMW has chosen a different path here. But the cockpit of the current threesome also looks high-quality and tidy. The iDrive control button on the center tunnel gives access to the convenience functions. Important components are operated via direct switches and there should be a few more of them. The seats in the threesome are good; But if you travel longer distances, you should opt for the optional sports seats with more lateral support and extended leg rests without much thought.

The seat heating and adjustment of the backrest width are also no longer an exotic extra. Like almost everything in the BMW, it has its price - but the body thanks you for it. In the rear you have to make compromises due to the size of the vehicle. The legroom is of the mid-range standard and people over 1.80 meters quickly want an Opel Vectra station wagon on longer journeys. The optional panoramic sliding roof with an 80 x 75 cm opening brings more light and air into the interior - the passengers in the rear are particularly pleased.

Many threesome fans come from the gasoline fraction and choose the lively six-cylinder from 325i, 330i or even 335i. But if you are honest with yourself, you hardly need more than the 320d. The smooth-running four-cylinder is encapsulated in an exemplary manner and still has an acceptable sound. The 120 kW / 163 PS common rail diesel does not come close to the agility of the six-in-line because of the lower speed range. But for that you already have a mighty thrust forwards from the lower engine speed.

From 2,000 tours, 340 Nm are available, which, despite 1.6 tons of empty weight with safety reserves, allow you to handle fast overtaking maneuvers with the usual confidence. The BMW 320d Touring accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.7 seconds and from 80 to 120 km / h in just seven seconds. The top speed is just under 220 km / h - significantly less than the faster sedan. In the practical test, the 320 consumed around 7.2 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers and thus a lot more than BMW had promised. After all, there is Euro4 and a particle filter.

Hardly anything is included in the base price of 30,109 euros. After all, there is a complete safety package with ESP, front, side and head airbags as well as ABS and child seat attachments. A manual air conditioning system, center armrest, on-board computer and an auxiliary connection for an external MP3 player exude a touch of comfort.

It may surprise you that things like fog lights (205 euros), automatic air conditioning (750 euros), leather steering wheel (from 180 euros), anti-glare mirrors (480 euros) and rain sensors (120 euros) cost extra. In this class, extras such as seat heating, xenon light, ski bag, xenon light or a navigation system are no longer a lavish luxury. A properly and by no means opulently equipped BMW 320d Touring costs well over 40,000 euros - a lot of money for a car, but one that has hardly any weaknesses - apart from the impressive price.
