The prices for motor oil in authorized workshops have risen significantly. However, customers can lower the price of an oil change themselves.
Motor oil is almost twice as expensive in the authorized workshop as in the trade. Drivers recently paid an average of around 23 euros per liter at the partner company of the automaker, according to a survey by the testing organization KÜS.
Those who bought their own oil got by on average with 12 euros. The lubricant is slightly more expensive at 15 euros in the independent workshop. Overall, motor oil prices have risen significantly since 2005. At that time the price in the authorized workshop was 15 euros, 8 euros below the current rate.
Only eight percent bring their own oil
So if you want to save, you should bring your own oil to the workshop. However, only eight percent of those surveyed have done this before. 65 percent of those questioned had concerns. Depending on the car, however, the potential savings are particularly high at the dealership. If a mid-range car needs around seven liters of oil, the bill drops by 77 euros.
However, some workshops charge higher service and disposal fees for oil you bring yourself. To be on the safe side, you should contact the company beforehand. This also makes it possible to clarify which oil to bring with you. An authorized workshop can refuse to fill lubricants without approval from the vehicle manufacturer. (SP-X)
