Manual work is still popular with icy car windows. While sprays are mostly ineffective, using hot water can even get really expensive.

Scratching with a good ice scraper is still the most effective method of clearing icy car windows in the morning. “Sprays with de-icers, on the other hand, hardly do anything,” says Sven Janssen from the Automobile Club of Germany (AvD) in Frankfurt. The sprayed alcohol-based liquids usually did not completely dissolve the ice layer, so that streaks form on the window when wiping. Often some of the mud freezes again. In addition, the funds are usually not cheap.

Pouring hot water onto iced windows is also not a good idea, according to Janssen: "If the window is damaged, it can crack." That becomes even more expensive for the driver. As an ice scraper, the AvD spokesman recommends devices with a copper bar. Drivers do not have to worry about damaging the glass surface.

Janssen points out that all windows in the car must be cleared in any case. Just scratching a "peephole" in the front is forbidden. (dpa)
