If you drive abroad, you should prepare the vocabulary for the petrol station on the other side of the border at home. Otherwise terms such as "Blyfri", "Essence" or "Gazole" pose an unsolvable puzzle.
In Spain the question at the petrol station is: Gasolina (petrol) or Gasóleo (diesel)? If the similar-sounding terms are confused, the wrong fuel is put in the tank. Even the smallest amount of gasoline in the tank of a diesel vehicle can ruin the injection pump or cause engine damage, according to the AvD automobile club. The club advises that the engine should not be started after this has happened. The car should be
towed to the nearest specialist workshop and the tank should be pumped out there.
Pump out the tank
The opposite case, however, in which diesel is accidentally refueled with diesel, rarely occurs. As a rule, diesel fuel nozzles are larger than petrol tank openings. If it does happen, for example because you have to rely on a canister, the following also applies: Do not start the engine and pump out the tank. It is less dramatic, at least in modern engines equipped with knock sensors and electronic knock control, to confuse regular gasoline with Super or Super Plus.
