A violation of the toll obligation can be expensive. In extreme cases, toll sinners face a fine of up to 800 euros, the ADAC announced. Small consolation: There is a discount with immediate checkout.

In countries with toll roads, "fare dodgers" face severe fines: drivers without a valid vignette in Slovenia have to shell out up to 800 euros, warns the ADAC. So it is little consolation that the fine is halved if it is paid immediately. In Slovenia, fines of up to ten times the price of the vignette are possible - i.e. up to 500 euros. A replacement toll of 120 euros is due in Austria. Anyone who does not pay this on the spot must expect a fine of at least 300 euros.

Toll in 20 European countries

According to the ADAC, around 20 European countries ask motorway or expressway users to pay. France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Serbia and Spain calculate the toll according to the length of the route: There you pay for every kilometer driven. Vignettes with different time windows are available in Bulgaria, Austria, Romania, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Hungary. Many countries charge additional tolls for bridges, tunnels and city crossings. (dpa / tmn)
