After an accident, the gas tank went up in flames. A boy was killed. Chrysler has now been fined a record $ 150 million for recklessness and disregard for human life.
A jury in the US state of Georgia has brought the automaker Chrysler to account for the accidental death of a four-year-old child. The company has to pay the boy's family $ 150 million in compensation, following Thursday's ruling (local time). The jury accused Chrysler of ruthlessness and disregard for human life.
Tank went up in flames
The boy was killed in a rear-end collision in 2012 after the gas tank in the back of the car went up in flames. Chrysler, which has now merged with Fiat to form the international industry giant FCA, has not sufficiently warned customers of the dangers of this design. Chrysler has already recalled 1.56 million vehicles because the tank installed behind the rear axle can pose a risk according to the NHTSA traffic authorities.
The company rejects the allegations and is considering appealing the verdict. The accident vehicle, a Jeep Grand Cherokee built in 1999, did not present an “unreasonable risk” to vehicle safety, according to a statement on Friday. According to Fiat Chrysler FCA, the jury was unable to consider extensive data from a three-year investigation due to the special legal situation in Georgia. (dpa)
