More and more cars are in poor condition on German roads. According to the deficiency report by the Society for Technical Monitoring, 19 percent of all vehicles did not receive a badge during the main inspection last year.

According to experts, more and more cars with major defects are on the road. Above all, the poor technical condition of many older cars is alarming, as can be seen from the deficiency report of the Society for Technical Monitoring (GTÜ) presented on Friday in Stuttgart. According to this, almost 19 percent of all vehicles that were registered for the main inspection in 2010 did not receive a badge due to significant defects. This is the highest value since 1998. In the previous year the figure was 17.6 percent.

Electrics and brakes problem children

The biggest problem children in most vehicles are the electrics and brakes, said the testing experts. But there are also frequent problems with axles, wheels and tires. In total, the GTÜ had put 3.6 million cars under the microscope during the general inspection last year (plus one percent). Including the emissions test, 5.6 million cars were checked (2009: 5.5 million). (dpa)
