The number of defective airbags in older cars is increasing. According to the test laboratory of Fahrzeugsystemdaten GmbH, 77,000 defective or unrepaired systems were registered in general inspections throughout Germany in 2008.
In a study from April to December 2006, the technology was faulty in only 38,000 cases. One of the reasons for this development is the frugality of car owners; For example, triggered airbags are sometimes removed without further ado after an accident in order to avoid expensive repairs. In the future, the greater inclusion of electronic components in the HU should help; A suitable test system is currently being subjected to a practical test by TÜV Süd as part of the main inspection.
Current assembly inspection
Due to a regulation from 2006, cars already have to be examined for eight safety-relevant electronic assemblies. Because of the three-year rule for new cars, the first test wave according to the new mode started in April 2009. Since then, the systems installed in the vehicle have been checked by experts for their existence, system errors, wear and tear and improper changes through tuning or manipulation. A more in-depth control of the electronics, which also controls the numerous safety-related control units in the vehicle and could thus reveal possible error messages, is expected to be included in the general inspection from 2010.
