Tires should be used for a maximum of ten years under permanent load. In the case of so-called stationary vehicles, the period of use ends earlier.

Driving car tires beyond their normal service life can be dangerous for motorists. According to the "Tire Safety Initiative", older tires become porous and cracked. In addition, the performance of the tires decreases when braking and when cornering. According to the latest research, the normal service life of car tires is a maximum of ten years, according to the initiative of the German Road Safety Council (DVR) in Bonn. The initiative thus contradicts the ADAC. The traffic club recently warned not to use the tires for more than eight years.

The date can be seen on the edge

According to the information, tires that are more than eight years old should only be used if they have previously been in constant use under normal conditions. They should be run during operation. However, tires on caravans, trailers or other so-called stationary vehicles age faster. It is therefore legally stipulated for combinations or combinations of cars with trailers that are approved for 100 kilometers per hour (km / h) that the trailer tires must be at least six years old.

The date of manufacture of car tires can be recognized by the so-called DOT number. It is embossed in an oval on the side of the tire and can have three or four digits. A three-digit number means that the tires were manufactured in the 1990s. Four-digit numbers are used from the year 2000 and represent the calendar week and year. Accordingly, a tire with the DOT number 2704 was produced in the 27th calendar week of 2004. (dpa)
