BMW stopped the production lines after 20,548 units of the M5. The successor to the sporty offshoot is already in the starting blocks and has a chance of being launched on the market this year.
As part of the model change in the BMW 5 series, production of the sporty offshoot M5 has now also been discontinued. In the past five years, BMW M GmbH had produced a total of 20,548 units of the 373 kW / 507 hp sedan with a V10 engine, the manufacturer announced in Munich. The M5 Touring, which has been available since 2007, accounted for 1025 units.
Successor with eight-cylinder
The most important sales market for the fifth M5 generation was the USA: According to BMW, 8,800 sedans were sold there. Great Britain / Ireland developed the greatest demand in Europe with 1776 vehicles, followed by the home market of Germany with 1647 vehicles. The M5 Touring has been sold 302 times in Germany.
The next M5 generation will power a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 412 kW / 560 hp, reports the Internet portal "auto-motor-und-sport.de". It also says that the M5 sedan is expected for 2010. A BMW spokesman did not want to comment on this information on Thursday. (dpa / tmn)
