The heat wave in Germany leads to so-called blow-ups. This leads to an increased risk of accidents, especially for motorcyclists. You should avoid such stretches.

The heat wave in Germany increases the risk of blow-ups on the autobahn. Motorists should adjust their speed, motorcyclists should avoid exposed routes. The cracked concrete roadways are particularly dangerous for them.

In the north of the A1 between Bad Oldesloe and Bargteheide the carriageway has already broken open, a piece of concrete thrown through the windshield of a truck, according to the police. The motorway is partially closed and is now being repaired. In southern Germany, according to media reports, there are currently speed limits on various motorways due to the risk of blow-up, including on sections of the A81, A5 and A6.

Older highways affected

So-called “blow-ups” have already occurred in recent years in the hot temperatures on German autobahns. Older motorway sections in concrete construction are particularly affected. The concrete slabs of the roadway expand when it is hot. If the slabs and the joints between them can no longer buffer the tension, the concrete slabs slide against each other, break and the roadway suddenly folds up. Blow-ups occur mostly in the late afternoon, as the intensity of the sun exposure is crucial for breaking open.

The automobile clubs recommend strictly adhering to speed limits on endangered sections of the road and increasing the distance to the vehicle in front. The traffic radio warns to drive on the affected concrete highways with increased caution. Motorcyclists should avoid the routes. (SP-X)
