The IT giant Google is looking for a partner with a view to its autonomous vehicle. The group does not necessarily want to become a car manufacturer, according to project manager Chris Urmson.

Google is looking for partners in the vehicle industry for its self-driving car. "We do not specifically want to be an automaker," said project leader Chris Urmson the Wall Street Journal. Google is looking for partnerships.

Change inner city traffic

In the meantime, the Internet company is building a fleet of new vehicles in cooperation with auto suppliers, Urmson announced in an interview published on Saturday. In May, Google presented the prototype of its first self-driving car, which is said to have no steering wheel and pedals because it is completely computer-controlled.

Google hopes to be able to change traffic in cities with such vehicles. The group does not yet have a finished business model for it, Urmson admitted. Established car manufacturers have so far been relying on cars that relieve the driver of control in individual situations, but can take control again at any time. Google is initially testing its technology in converted production vehicles from brands such as Toyota and Lexus.

Google boss Sergey Brin had already said in July that it made sense to look for production partners from the auto industry. (AG / dpa)
