BMW orders more and more vehicles with possibly defective airbags to the workshops in the USA. However, the Munich-based company is nowhere near the number of cars recalled by Honda.

The German automaker BMW is expanding the recall of vehicles in the USA because of possibly defective airbags. About 140,000 model series 3 cars from 2004 to 2006 are affected, the manufacturer announced on Monday. The US traffic authority NHTSA had recently increased the pressure on the Japanese airbag manufacturer Takata and the affected carmakers to expand their recalls.

Six deaths so far

Other automakers are also affected by the airbag problems, most notably Honda. To date, the company has initiated the replacement of defective Takata airbags in over 13 million cars worldwide.

The airbags can burst due to poor workmanship - this leads to an explosion that blows up parts of the metal cladding and hurls it through the vehicle compartment. Lawyers estimate five fatalities in America and one in Malaysia. (dpa)
