If you go on vacation by car, you should focus on a moderate and steady speed instead of racing. If the traffic situation allows, 120 km / h is a reasonable travel speed on the autobahn, says Gerd Lottsiepen from Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD). "At this speed, the consumption is not too high and the stress for the driver is relatively low."
The time saved by driving fast is often overestimated. It is also extremely exhausting on long journeys. “Drivers then need more breaks, which makes up for the time saved,” Lottsiepen points out. Fuel consumption increases sharply at high speed: A VW Golf 1.4 TSI consumes around 5 liters at 100 km / h, and 8 liters at 140 km / h, he calculates as an example.
Braking costs fuel
It is important to drive with foresight: Constant braking and subsequent acceleration costs a lot of fuel, explains Lottsiepen. It is better to “use the momentum” - for example, when not driving close to an overtaking truck, but instead slow down early and roll up to the truck. The car loses less speed and does not have to be accelerated as much afterwards.
For long distances, Lottsiepen recommends an overnight stay. "A journey time of 16 hours, for example to Italy, is too much even with regular breaks." Apart from the increasing risk of accidents, travelers arrive broken and exhausted after such a tour. You should rather look for a nice place on the route and plan a stop there for one night.
