The hybrid drive is gradually conquering all vehicle classes. While the German carmakers offer the technology primarily in large and expensive cars, the Japanese are focusing on a new type of downsizing.

The German automobile manufacturers have so far only offered hybrid drives in expensive vehicles such as the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7 Series and Porsche Cayenne. According to a calculation by www.meinauto.de, the average list price is 90,538 euros. According to a survey by Honda, cheap hybrid cars would make the alternative technology much more interesting. 77 percent of those surveyed stated that a vehicle for less than 20,000 euros could contribute "to the fact that hybrid technology is no longer viewed as 'too expensive' and that is precisely what makes it interesting for many people".

Toyota Yaris 2010 with hybrid drive

The Japanese manufacturers Honda and Toyota currently offer their fuel-saving technology in the compact class models Insight, Civic, Prius and Auris. Now both companies have announced small cars with the twin engine. The Honda Jazz Hybrid starts on April 16 at prices from 16,450 euros. The Toyota Yaris should come to dealers in the coming year.

"The willingness to buy an eco-car has long been there," says Alexander Bugge, market expert at the online portal. "What is missing are eco-models from German manufacturers in high-volume segments at acceptable prices." (mid)
