Skoda has broken the 500,000-unit mark in China since production began in 2007. In the previous year, 180,000 cars were sold on the Chinese market.

The 500,000th Skoda was produced at the VW plant in Shanghai. The Czech brand has also been producing its models in China since mid-2007. In the previous year, the VW subsidiary was able to sell more than 180,000 vehicles on the Chinese market. This made China the largest sales market for Skoda for the first time.

China's most important growth market

In view of the worldwide sales plans, the Chinese market is of particular importance. "Skoda will at least double its worldwide sales per year to around 1.5 million units by 2018. The greatest growth is likely to come from the emerging countries alongside Europe. China is the most important growth market for us," said Skoda boss Winfried Vahland. "The production brand of more than 500,000 vehicles shows how solid and strong our base in China has become within just four years," added Vahland according to the company's press release.

Skoda plans to start producing the compact SUV Yeti in China from 2013 onwards, the dealer network is to be expanded from currently 300 to over 600. (AG / FM)
