Volvo can make the successor to its large SUV XC 90 much more flexible than before. The new platform is less restrictive for developers and offers more comfort for passengers.
With the new Volvo XC90, the Swedish manufacturer is also launching a new platform in the coming days. The "scalable product architecture (SPA)" developed over the course of four years offers greater freedom in development and design and allows all models to be manufactured on one production line. "The XC 90 offers the agility of a much smaller and flatter vehicle as well as a high level of comfort for the driver and passengers in a spacious interior," explains developer Peter Mertens.
Less restrictions
With SPA, previous design restrictions such as wheelbase, overhang, overall vehicle height and the height of the front end are no longer applicable. In addition, SPA enables a technical restart. In the Volvo XC90, for example, around 90 percent of the components will be used for the first time. SPA is the cornerstone of the Volvo Car Group's transformation and growth plan, which includes investments of $ 11 billion. (AG)
