Gerhard Plattner starts on Monday on a fuel-saving tour through Europe. On board are three dummies filled with water. They should provide real conditions.

Preparations are in full swing. On Monday, Gerhard Plattner will start his European tour through 36 countries in a Skoda Roomster 1.4 TDI with 80 HP at the headquarters of the Czech car manufacturer in Mlada Boleslav. By his return on July 24th at the same place, Plattner claims to have covered 15,460 kilometers. For this distance he has a total fuel charge of 1000 euros.

Two money bags taken over

Plattner had the fuel money handed over to him in two linen bags from his bank at his home in Innsbruck on Friday. Plattner hopes that at the end of the tour he had to spend as little of the fuel money as possible. "With an ecological driving style, I hope that I can bring the average consumption to just under five liters," said Plattner on Friday the Autogazette. “And that under realistic everyday conditions,” adds Plattner.

So Plattner is not only accompanied by three dummies filled with water - they have a total weight of 140 kilograms alone - but in the trunk there is also the luggage for a family of four. In addition, Plattner will be on his European tour on routes that are quite tough. For example, his journey in Andorra also takes him to the mountains. So these are anything but conditions that are conducive to low fuel consumption.

But Plattner and Skoda want to show that in times of ever increasing gasoline prices and in view of the discussion about a reduction in CO2 values, drivers themselves can decisively influence fuel consumption through their driving style. «We know that a car like the Roomster is extremely economical. With a campaign like the fuel-saving tour, we also want to show what possibilities our vehicles offer in terms of range and fuel costs, if you use common sense,”said Skoda spokesman Christoph Ludewig. And that what can be saved through a sensible driving style can of course also be achieved with other makes. (AG)
