Daimler's truck division has to launch an austerity program due to weak business outside of Europe. Job cuts are also not excluded.

Because of weak business outside of Europe, Daimler's truck division is threatened with an austerity program and job cuts. "With the exception of Europe, almost all the relevant markets went worse than expected," said division manager Wolfgang Bernhard the Handelsblatt. In the future, trucks will also be produced in China.

According to this, savings in fixed costs for the production of Mercedes-Benz trucks should contribute 400 million euros in addition to the already planned gross profit improvement of one billion euros for the next two years. "It's primarily about costs. But we cannot rule out job cuts in principle," said Bernhard.

Production in China

Daimler is planning future production facilities in China. "At the end of the decade, we want to launch the Mercedes-Benz Trucks brand in China," said Bernhard. The Actros model will be adapted to Chinese requirements and "quantities in the five-digit range" will be produced on site.

China is the world's largest market for trucks. Mercedes would be the first foreign brand to produce trucks in China. In May, Daimler lowered its sales and profit forecasts because of the weaker markets in the USA, South America and Asia. (dpa)
