Peugeot will continue to expand its Mu mobility concept. The French carmaker is expanding its rental stations from currently four to 20.
The French car manufacturer PSA Peugeot is expanding its rental car business in Germany. According to information from "Welt", Peugeot is increasing the number of its locations for the mobility concept called "Mu" from currently four to 20. Further "Mu" locations are planned in Saarbrücken, Dortmund, Regensburg, Reutlingen and Friedrichshafen, among others. In Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, Peugeot has been leasing its cars according to the "Mu" concept since last year.
The newspaper quoted a manager as saying: "We are responding to the fact that, especially young people in metropolitan areas are increasingly mobile, but do not want to buy a car straight away." So far, around 2,000 customers have regularly used the model in the three major cities.
Peugeot relies on mobility accounts
"Mu" works by logging into the Internet, opening a kind of mobility account, paying in money and being able to book a car. However, unlike the rental concepts of other automobile manufacturers, you have to pick up the vehicle at a specific location and bring it back. According to the company, this is profitable for Peugeot. In the future, the company intends to increasingly involve independent car dealers as a docking station for its cars.
According to traffic experts, having one's own car will continue to lose importance in the long term. For young people in particular, it is therefore often no longer the status symbol. "The freedom to live without a car is gaining in value today," said Gerd Lottsiepen, transport policy spokesman for the Verkehrsclub Deutschland, recently. In 2010 alone, the number of Car-Sharing users in Germany increased by 20 percent to around 190,000, according to the Federal CarSharing Association. (dpa)
