New, but retro: Audi is showing a nice study with a two-seater that is supposed to handle urban traffic electrically - but will never do it.

By Thomas Flehmer

Everything is coming back: DVBT users have an indoor antenna in the living room, and thanks to the flood of chimneys, briquettes are in demand as they used to be after the Second World War. The Audi urban concept fits in well with this time. An electric vehicle with the design of a sporty Messerschmitt - a modern car with a retro design. "We don't know what mobility will look like in 2020. The Urban Concept is a new dimension, a different perspective," said Audi boss Rupert Stadler at the presentation two days before the start of the IAA.

Audi urban concept also as an open Spyder

The 3.20 meter long two-seater, which is also making its debut as an open Spyder, clearly shows that people were thinking outside the box. The bonds to Goggomobil or the sporty MGs cannot be overlooked. And Audi goes back even further in contemporary history.

In 1919 the company had already offered a vehicle without a combustion engine with the Slaby Behringer electric car. While the idea with the electric motor did not catch on almost a hundred years ago, the technology is currently booming. "Today's concept carries essential features from back then carried over into the modern age", Stadler continues.

Inspired by the airplane

In view of the changing behavior towards the car, the cheeky runabout with a 20 hp electric motor would really be a possible alternative - but only as a fun vehicle. Inspired by the glider, there are no doors, just a roof flap that is pushed back so that you can get in.

Since there are no doors, the driver and front passenger get in from above - and they do so carefully, as there is little space in the puristic interior. "You slide into the pulpit," says Audi board member Michael Dick, who, together with designer Markus Auerbach, drove the electric car into the newly designed Audi hall on the exhibition grounds.

The Audi urban concept weighs just 480 kilograms

Two electric motors drive the vehicle, which weighs just 480 kilograms, and the already famous Audi lightweight construction with a carbon fiber monocoque is an announcement. "We were at the point of whether there could still be an object between the scooter and the small car," said Auerbach. The Urban Concept has proven it.

But the futuristic car will probably never see series production, even if Dick does not want to rule this out at first. Parts of the vehicle will flow into the coming generations of Audi and also pave the way for electric mobility. The new Audi A2 could benefit from the drive. Because even with the small car that was vilified ten years ago, the motto in Ingolstadt is: Everything is coming back.
