Daimler is planning the use of electric cars in its car sharing project Car2go. The Smart Fortwo Electric Drive is to be used.
According to “Automobilwoche”, the Daimler car sharing subsidiary Car2go wants to offer pure electric vehicles for rent for the first time in a few weeks. It was a practical test with initially only a handful of vehicles, the industry and business newspaper reported in advance on Saturday. The fully electric Smart Fortwo with a lithium-ion battery will be used. With Car2go, customers can - after a one-time registration - rent vehicles distributed throughout the city and park them at any location.
Test of the rental model
According to the sheet, it will now be tested under which conditions the rental model works when electric vehicles with a limited range are used. The practical test will take place in Ulm and Neu-Ulm. To this end, the Stadtwerke SWU built a network of electricity pumps. Daimler started Car2Go as a pilot project in Ulm in October 2008, and the company is now present in several cities with rental Smarts. (dpa)
