Toyota remains the world's largest automaker with 7.6 million vehicles in September. Volkswagen follows in front of General Motors.

In the first nine months of this year, the Japanese car company Toyota maintained its position as the world's top-selling car manufacturer, ahead of rivals Volkswagen and General Motors. As the industry leader announced on Monday, the number of cars delivered rose by 2.8 percent year-on-year to a record of 7.6 million vehicles.

VW sells 7.4 million cars

The VW group had delivered 7.4 million cars in the first three quarters, the US rival GM 7.3 million. The Toyota Group, which also includes the commercial vehicle manufacturer Hino Motors and the small car maker Daihatsu Motor, is aiming for sales of 10.2 million cars for the year as a whole - that would be a record.

When the September figures were announced, Volkswagen had said that it wanted to achieve ten million deliveries this year "despite the continued high demands of the markets" (Group Sales Director Christian Klingler). Europe's largest carmaker had originally only wanted to achieve this level in four years. (AG / dpa)
