In the USA, for the first time, more women than men have a driver's license. According to a study by the University of Michigan, the gender ratio has reversed for the first time since the introduction of the automobile.
In the US, women drive in the fast lane. At least the sheer number of female drivers was affected. The US is the world's first major auto nation to report more female than male drivers. According to a study by the University of Michigan, 105.7 million women are currently compared to 104.3 million men. This is the first time since the invention of the automobile the gender ratio has reversed in the land of unlimited possibilities.
There is less interest in cars among men
Interest in cars is falling, especially among young American men. The number of driver license holders in the 25 to 29 age group has declined by 10.6 percent for men over the past 15 years, while it has increased by 4.7 percent for women.
According to the study, the reasons for the development are diverse. In general, the car is becoming less important as a status symbol and fetish. Young men grew up in the back seat of vehicles that were more stuck in traffic than could drive freely - with cursing parents at the wheel. Unlike her fathers, such a romantic relationship with the car could not develop.
Tinkering and screwing on your own vehicle as a trigger for an emotional bond has also ceased in recent decades. Modern cars are so crammed with complicated technology that it is hardly possible anymore. Last but not least, economic reasons also play a role: The unemployment rate for young men in the USA is significantly higher than for young women - many of those affected can no longer afford a car.
No meaningful statistics from the KBA
For Germany, it is difficult to determine the exact gender ratio among drivers' license holders. As of January 2012, the Federal Motor Transport Authority had around 6.01 million female car drivers and 6.08 million male drivers. However, the authority only has access to the data on the card driving license. Anyone who obtained their driver's license before 1999 and still has the paper driver's license issued at the time does not appear in the statistics. The last official total figures are from 2004. At that time, men with 28.5 million car driving licenses were still well ahead of women, of whom 24.5 million had a driver's license.
The US study, by the way, expressly welcomes the growing proportion of women in driving license holders. As a rule, women drivers would choose smaller, weaker and more economical vehicles than men and thus reduce environmental pollution and the risk of accidents. (SP-X)
