The Japanese car maker Toyota continues to rely on hybrid drives. A full hybrid is to be installed in the Auris in the middle of next year.
The world's largest car manufacturer Toyota also wants to bring a hybrid vehicle to the market in the compact class. From mid-2010 onwards, the Auris compact class car is to be built as a full hybrid with a gasoline and electric motor, said Toyota Germany boss Alain Uyttenhoven on Friday in Mühlheim near Frankfurt. The vehicle will be produced in Burnaston, UK.
More low-emission vehicles
"With the decision, Toyota has taken an important step so that more customers can drive a full hybrid in the future," said Toyota's European chief Tadashi Arashima. This is important in order to be able to bring more low-emission cars onto Europe's roads. In the first half of 2009, 55,500 vehicles of the “conventional” Auris were sold across Europe.
So far, Toyota has only been on the market in Europe with one hybrid, the Prius. The mid-range car has been sold around 1.3 million times worldwide since 1997, one in ten of them in Europe.
Toyota suffered worldwide sales in the first five months of 2009 by 25 percent to 2.92 million units. In Germany, on the other hand, the manufacturer grew by 42.3 percent to 78,469 vehicles in the first half of the year thanks to the scrapping premium. (dpa)
