There is currently an internal debate about the number one in Volkswagen's future electrical business. Unlike the board of directors, parts of the supervisory board demand a leading role for the VW Golf.
According to press reports, there is apparently a discussion at Volkswagen about the future electric strategy. According to a report by the Handelsblatt, members of the supervisory board think it makes more sense instead of the small car Up! to promote the electric Golf more strongly. VW boss Martin Winterkorn recently presented this differently at the Geneva auto show. Accordingly, the "E-Golf" would only be released after the Elektro-Up! come on the market.
Hope for larger numbers
Since the Golf, like many other models from various group brands, will be based on the new modular transverse matrix, a large number of e-cars could be achieved quickly. The one-time expense in the billions can thus be passed on to many cars. From the Up, however, a maximum of 150,000 units per year will initially roll off the assembly line. With this in mind, an electrical modular transverse matrix should have priority over an E-Up. Behind the debate there is obviously a conflict between technicians and businesspeople. It is true that the assumption is correct that the Golf could achieve greater market penetration, but only in the event that the electric version meets the higher demands of compact-class customers. But for this he would also have to go beyond the city traffic, for which the Up! is designedbe applicable. (AG / mid)
