At Volvo there are first series of tests to offer the compact C30 as an electric car in the future. So converted, it should be suitable for city traffic.
Tests are currently underway at Volvo for a series vehicle with an electric drive. The manufacturer is focusing on several battery-powered prototypes of the Volvo C30 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), which should have a range of up to 150 kilometers. In 2010 Volvo will start the first field test with it. The top speed is initially limited to 130 km / h. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h can take place in less than 11 seconds.
Charging at a conventional socket
The Volvo C30 BEV is powered by a lithium-ion battery with an electrical output of 24 kWh, which is charged via a conventional socket. “The Volvo C30 is the first vehicle with an electric drive that we are testing,” says Lennart Stegland, Director of Volvo Special Vehicles. It is particularly suitable for city traffic because of its relatively low weight. At Volvo, too, the assumption is that electric cars are mainly used in urban areas and by commuters. (AG)
