The Porsche plant in Leipzig has been awarded the contract to produce the fifth series. At least 1000 new jobs will be created in the course of production.
The Porsche supervisory board has awarded the production of the compact SUV running under the project name Cajun to Leipzig. For the production of the fifth series of the sports car manufacturer, the plant is to be expanded as a full-fledged production site including body construction and paint shop. The construction work is to begin - subject to the approval of the authorities - in 2011 on the 400 hectare area, the manufacturer announced.
Annual sales of 60,000 units planned
"Even during the production of the Cayenne and Panamera, our Leipzig plant impressively demonstrated that it can produce premium vehicles of the highest quality," said Porsche CEO Matthias Müller. "The decision for this location is therefore a vote of confidence in the Skills of our Leipzig employees, but at the same time a further contribution to the economic expansion of the region."
At least 1000 new jobs are to be created for production. In Zuffenhausen and Weissach, too, should be increased. Since the opening of the Leipzig location in 2002, the four-seat Gran Turismo Panamera has been manufactured in Saxony in addition to the Cayenne for almost two years. The Cajun should be sold from 2013. Porsche is aiming for annual sales of 60,000 units for the Cayenne's little brother, which is based on the Audi Q5. (AG)
