BMW has put four wind turbines into operation at its plant in Leipzig. They should provide green electricity for the electric vehicles of the Munich company. The i3 will be launched in autumn.

The car manufacturer BMW has put four wind turbines into operation on its factory site in Leipzig. The company announced on Sunday that they should provide green electricity for the production of electric vehicles. The wind turbines have a total output of ten megawatts and generate around 26 gigawatt hours of electricity annually. That is more than will be needed for the upcoming production of electric vehicles, it said. Series production of the BMW i3 will begin here in autumn 2013.

Example of energy transition

Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs, Sven Morlok (FDP), cited the BMW plant as an example of a successful energy transition. "Renewable energy must be affordable and must not displace jobs," declared the minister. According to the company, the electricity from the wind turbines remains completely in the plant and is distributed across the site via an energy center. The wind turbines should cover around a fifth of the total electricity requirements of the BMW plant in Leipzig.

“We don't just want to get emission-free cars on the road, we also want to make the production process sustainable. This is the only way that electric mobility really makes sense. We are sending a clear signal here with the wind turbines,”said Manfred Erlacher, head of the BMW plant in Leipzig. (AG / dpa)
