The scrapping fever subsides. While the scrapyards are still well filled, the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control reports a significant decrease in daily applications.
The interest of Germans in the scrapping premium for old cars has waned. The Federal Office for Economics and Export Control (Bafa) in Eschborn near Frankfurt, which is responsible for the award, receives 5,000 to 10,000 applications a day for the 2,500 euros per car, as a spokesman announced on Tuesday.
Only 20 percent
Just a few weeks ago, daily receipts of up to 25,000 items were the rule; after the introduction of the new online reservation procedure at the end of March, even 360,000 applications were received in one day. Bafa currently has almost 1.4 million applications. If up to 10,000 registrations continue to be received per day, the increased funds of 5 billion euros for 2 million prizes would be exhausted by the summer. However, the Bafa spokesman said that the course of registrations could not be reliably predicted.
Inaccurate numbers
The Federal Office expects a not inconsiderable number of cases in which a premium cannot be paid out. At the start of the award process, around 4 percent of the applicants were unable to provide the required evidence. According to the spokesman for the authorities, the reservation procedure introduced at the end of March represents a minor hurdle for citizens. At the beginning of the internet reservation procedure there were also thousands of duplicates. An exact number has not yet been determined. (dpa)
