Diesel engines are no longer taboo in the small car class either. Some want it cheap, others sporty. With the Fiesta 1.6 TDCi S, Ford shows that economy and driving pleasure are not mutually exclusive.

The Fiesta ST 150 showed the way - more are to follow. Ford is back to its sportiness after years of abstinence. After all, the brand has a great motorsport tradition well into the 1980s. Little by little, more sport versions are being added to the powerful model range. The Ford Fiesta 1.6 TDCi S is new to the range. The small "S" at the rear reveals that it should not only be sporty. At first glance, it could also be the new Cologne Rennsemmel called ST 150. However, if you turn the ignition key, you will hear an unmistakable nailing sound. A modified 1.6-liter TDCi unit can be seen under the bonnet. Derived from the PSA diesel with 109 hp, the common rail diesel in the small Fiesta has a reduced output. But even with almost 20 horses less over the front axle, the Fiesta S is a lot of fun.

More efficient

While the Fiesta was previously only powered by a 1.4 liter diesel with 68 hp, the 1.6 liter version is for those who want a little more. 66 kW / 90 PS and a maximum torque of 204 Nm at 1,750 rpm are very promising values. So the front-wheel drive doesn't disappoint on the first exit on the country road. The 90 horsepower pulls hard at the wheel at the cavalier start and the 70 km / h mark has passed by. 0 to 100 km / h in just under 12 seconds doesn't sound as good as they drive. Then the intermediate sprint to overtake on the country road. The five-speed circuit could be smoother. After all, the joystick is comfortable to hold. After all, the Fiesta S makes sports cars. The top speed: almost 180 km / h. To be honest: we expected a little more. But the French entrails under the bonnet are noticeably designed not to be sporty, but to save fuel.

Good consumption values

If you want to, you will consume well under five liters of diesel per 100 km. Nevertheless, the almost 1.2-ton Fiesta 1.6 TDCi still cuts a sporty figure. Euro 4 goes without saying; a particle filter does not. You can travel around 900 km on one tank of fuel. The 1.6 TDCi S differs from its tame Fiesta brothers in one or the other visual amenity. Alloy rims, spoilers and aprons make for an impressive appearance. The front with the large air inlets is particularly pleasing and makes you want to chase corners. That's easy with the good chassis. The Ford Fiesta lies well and tightly on the road. The suspension comfort could be better on the rear axle. But we ourselves: we are sitting in a racing roll. The steering is good, as are the brakes. There is no ESP.

The interior is not as pleasing as the outfit. The tight sports seats are comfortable; but the headrests cannot be adjusted enough; There is not even a lock in the rear for the important safety equipment. The dashboard is quite dull and unkind. Especially the sparse instrumentation and the center console miss every whistle - a shame. The space available at the 4.03 m long fiesta is good at the front; the rear is tight due to the class. The trunk swallows 284 to 947 liters.

The Ford Fiesta 1.6 TDCi Sport is a niche model; but a worth driving one. The price of 16,050 euros is by no means a stick. But you will find what you are looking for a class higher with the Focus. After all, there are electric mirrors, fog lights and sports package as standard. At least the manual air conditioning for an extra 1,110 euros should still be included ex works. The simple navigation system from Blaupunkt costs 1,575 euros.
