BWM wants to manufacture the Mini, which was previously built exclusively in Europe, in China in the future. As expected, the Dax group is entering into a partnership with the Chinese car maker Great Wall.

As the company announced in Munich, the aim is to produce electrically powered minis in China. The model will also roll off the assembly line at the main UK plant in Oxford from 2019. Talks on a possible partnership had been known since October.

Great Wall is China's largest manufacturer of urban SUVs. The two partners have now signed a non-binding preliminary contract, on the basis of which the details of the cooperation will be worked out - such as the production site and the investments.

BMW works with two partners

BMW will then work with a second Chinese partner in the world's largest car market. The BMW brand cars have long been produced there in a joint venture with the manufacturer Brilliance. This partnership should be expanded, said the German car company. There are also no plans to set up an additional sales organization for the new electric mini.

Last year, the BMW small car brand sold 35,000 of its 372,000 cars sold worldwide in China. According to BMW, a partner is now required for further growth. For local production, a joint venture partner in the country is required according to the rules in force in China. Import duties are levied on imported cars, which make the cars more expensive.
