Volvo will launch another model below its XC90 SUV. The concept car will be presented at the Detroit Motor Show in early January.

The Swedish car manufacturer Volvo is expanding the XC family with an additional off-road vehicle below the XC90. At the North American International Auto Show (January 13-21) in Detroit, a study called the XC60 Concept will give an outlook on the series version of the XC60, the Swedish automaker announced in Gothenburg. In the spring of 2009, the model should then come on the market.

Two-part tailgate

According to the Swedes, the compact off-road vehicle, which looks significantly smaller than the XC90 and the long-legged off-road suit XC70, not only shows many design elements of future Volvo generations such as the larger brand logo in the radiator grille, more trimmed headlights or a tailgate inspired by the C30. He also demonstrates technical details that could soon go into series production. The tailgate, for example, is divided into two parts and designed so that the lower part swings over the upper part when it is opened. This means that less space is required behind the vehicle.

In addition, the lower part of the tailgate is transparent from the inside, so that the driver has a good overview when maneuvering. The innovative seats, which like the headrests, have special and in some cases even illuminated recesses, also help him.

New security system

While these are primarily intended for hairstyles with pigtails or ponytails in the headrests, they should allow a better view and pleasant air circulation in the backrest. According to Volvo, one of the other innovations in the study is the recently introduced “City Safety” system, which uses a special sensor to monitor the traffic ahead. At speeds below 30 km / h, it automatically initiates emergency braking if a collision is imminent. Volvo has not yet announced which engine the study is equipped with and which units are intended for the series version.
