Volvo is expanding its range of flexifuel engines. With the new five-cylinder, the V70 and S80 have 231 hp under the hood.

Volvo gives its flexifuel engines more sportiness. From June, units with 170 kW / 231 hp will be available for the V70 and S80, which can be refueled either with gasoline or low-pollutant bio-ethanol (E85). “Thanks to the further technical developments, we can offer customers of our larger models an extraordinary combination of driving fun and optimized environmental properties,” says Magnus Johnsson, Senior Vice President Product Development at Volvo Cars.

Higher boost pressure

The consumption of the 2.5FT DRIVe turbo engine with five cylinders was reduced by up to six percent compared to the previous model with increased performance. The increase in performance is made possible by new software that ensures a higher boost pressure. At the same time, reducing the engine speed results in lower fuel consumption.

The V70 with a manual six-speed gearbox therefore consumes an average of 8.8 liters per 100 kilometers, while the Volvo S80 2.5FT DRIVe consumes 8.6 liters. In conjunction with the optionally available 6-speed automatic transmission including Geartronic function, the total consumption of the Volvo V70 2.5FT DRIVe is 9.7 liters and that of the Volvo S80 2.5FT DRIVe is 9.6 liters. When operating with low-pollutant bio-ethanol (E85), the consumption values are around 30 percent higher due to the lower energy content. On the other hand, the liter price for E85 is well below that of gasoline. At the same time, CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 80 percent.

At least 38,580 euros must be invested for the V70 2.5FT DRIVe, the prices for the Volvo S80 2.5FT DRIVe start at 38,260 euros. (AG)
