Porsche sorts out the naturally aspirated engine in the new 911. The sports car manufacturer from Stuttgart relies almost exclusively on six-cylinder turbos for its coupé and convertible with its numerous derivatives.
Paradigm shift at Porsche: the sports car manufacturer is decommissioning the naturally aspirated engine in its most important model and will only be installing turbo engines in the 911 in future. Porsche announced this shortly before the premiere of the revised sports car at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt (visitor days September 17 to 27). There, Porsche is showing the Carrera and Carrera S as coupé and convertible with a retouched design, modernized interior and new drive, before the car goes on sale on December 12th. Prices then start at 93,344 euros for the Carrara Coupé and 107,434 euros for the convertible. The S models cost 108,505 and 121,595 euros respectively.
Porsche 911 GT3 still with vacuum cleaner
Where previously naturally aspirated engines with a displacement of 3.4 and 3.8 liters were used, Porsche is now assembling a six-cylinder boxer with 3.0 liters and twin-turbo charging. Thereby, the performance increases by 15 kW / 20 hp to 272 kW / PS 370 in Carrera and 309 kW / PS 420 in Carrera S. In addition, the torque will only peak at 450 and 500 Nm in the future. According to the manufacturer, this enables better driving performance: Depending on the configuration, the Carrera achieves a sprint value of 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 295 km / h. The best values for the Carrera S are 3.9 seconds and 308 km / h.
Nevertheless, with the new engines, fuel consumption drops by up to one liter to 7.4 liters for the most economical entry-level model and 7.7 liters for the most efficient Carrera S. This corresponds to CO2 values of 169 and 174 g / km. However, the vacuum era in the 911 is not quite over yet: the GT3 and GT3 RS sports variants initially continue to run without a charger.
Porsche 911 Carrera S receives rear-wheel steering
The paradigm shift in the rear is the defining topic. But Porsche has also made other changes. So there is the future for all variants as standard a suspension with active dampers and for the Carrera S for the first time an optional rear-wheel steering. In addition, the navigation system is being renewed, can now read handwriting, go online and integrate smartphones better. (dpa / tmn)
