Statistically speaking, the motorway is not a particular focus of accidents. In the summer months, however, the expressways cannot always live up to their good reputation, as a study by the Auto Club Europa has found.
Vacationers are currently better off driving particularly carefully on motorways: in summer, most accidents there happen within a year. This is the result of a new study by the Auto Club Europa (ACE). According to this, July has the most crashes during the year. The number of accidents in June and August was also above average. The cause is often that drivers press the gas too hard: in 40 percent of the accidents, those involved were driving too fast.
East surely than the west
Overall, the number of motorway accidents has fallen significantly in recent years. Also, only every twentieth traffic accident in Germany happens on a motorway. However, a tenth of all fatal accidents occur here. When comparing the federal states, the highways in Hamburg and Berlin turned out to be particularly dangerous. According to statistics, however, the expressways in the east are generally safer than those in the western and southern federal states. (dpa / tmn)
