The federal government wants to grant car sharing privileges. Extra parking spaces for rental cars would be a point of the law, otherwise the content and schedule would not yet be fixed.
The federal government wants to promote so-called car sharing with privileges such as special parking spaces. "A law to give priority to the use of car-sharing vehicles is currently being drawn up," said a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Transport on Saturday in Berlin, confirming information from the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung". According to the ministry, the contents of the law and a specific timetable have not yet been set.
Legal security for municipalities
"We want to promote the mobility of the future," said the SPD parliamentary group vice Sören Bartol of the German press agency. Car sharing reduces traffic in the city centers. "We want municipalities to finally have legal certainty and be able to designate extra parking spaces for car sharing vehicles." It is conceivable that they could be awarded by tendering in the municipalities to appropriate car sharing providers. "That must be regulated nationwide in road traffic law," says Bartol.
“Carsharing” literally means “car parts”. The basic idea: a car stands around unused for most of the day, while several users can share a car with car sharing. In terms of the overall car business, car sharing is a niche market - but with strong growth rates. About 150 providersare at the start according to previous expert estimates, and automakers are also involved. The Federal Association of Carsharing assumes more than one million users.
Separate parking spaces for rental cars
The FAZ quoted an internal list of the federal government's plans: “Car sharing makes an important contribution to the networking of modes of transport and to sustainable urban and regional transport. … With the planned rules on car sharing, these vehicles are to be given privileges in road traffic."
The law is intended to create the basis for identifying parking spaces for car sharing vehicles in a legally secure manner. In practice, the municipalities could then specify parking spaces with a traffic sign similar to that for taxi stops. "In addition, it should be made possible for the municipalities to waive parking fees for these vehicles," says the FAZ in the project paper. The regulations should apply uniformly throughout Germany. (dpa)
