At the New York Auto Show, Jeep presented the new Cherokee to the public for the first time. In the coming year, the "Indian" will also come to Europe in the angular Commander look.

The strong competition from the Far East and Europe has hit the Jeep Cherokee in the last few years. The former class favorite fell behind in many countries due to high prices, equipment gaps and overpowering competition. Customers often opted for RAV4, X-Trail or X3. Hardly anyone in this class appreciates the magnificent off-road potential of the Cherokee with all-wheel drive and gear reduction. Despite all off-road capabilities, the newly developed Cherokee, which is sold in the USA under the name Liberty, focuses on more lifestyle. Its cube design is clearly based on the current Jeep Commander.

More space inside

More leisure time - this is expressed in particular by the new fabric roof, which the 4.50 meter long Jeep Cherokee has as an option. While other manufacturers rely on overpowering panoramic roofs made of glass, the Cherokee wants to score with a traditional roof hatch in the style of Citroen 2CV or Renault 4. Otherwise, the groundbreaking innovations in the new Cherokee are kept within limits. The body and design have become a bit more angular in accordance with Commander styling; but looks good on the North American. The dimensions have hardly changed. However, there is more space inside. Unfortunately, the US Liberty has retained the loveless plastics of its predecessor.

Like its predecessor, the 2008 model year also has the two all-wheel drive systems Selec-Trac II (automatic) and Command-Trac (manual). Unlike in its home country, the Jeep Cherokee will only be available with all-wheel drive in Europe. In North America there is a slimmed-down entry-level version with rear-wheel drive. In the USA, the new Jeep Liberty will be launched in the second half of 2007 with initially only one engine variant. The revised 3.7-liter V6 develops 157 kW / 210 hp and 319 Nm of torque. At a later date, the medium-sized Jeep will also be launched in the USA with a 2.8 liter common rail diesel that already powers the new Jeep Wrangler and has around 177 hp. A six-speed manual transmission remains as standard. The two versions Sport and Limited are also optionally available with a four-speed automatic. The exact prices have not yet been determined; but should be on par with the predecessor.
