Mercedes had the best half-year in the company's history. Those in charge are hoping for a further boost for the second half of the year with the C-Class, which will only be launched in the most important markets in autumn.

With a plus of 12.8 percent, Mercedes recorded the best half-year result in the company's history. A total of 783,520 vehicles found new customers in the first six months. "The first half of the year was extremely successful for us," said Ola Källenius, Chief Sales Officer, "with sales of our vehicles we are on track to make 2014 another record year."

Hope for Mercedes C-Class in USA and China

Also for June, the Stuttgart-based company posted an increase of eight percent with 142,136 cars worldwide. The European market also contributed, with 352,198 units sold, an increase of 7.4 percent. Sales on the home market remained stable with 125,215 sales and an increase of 0.7 percent, even if a decrease of 7.9 percent had to be acknowledged in June with almost 23,000 units sold.

There are still upward trends in Daimler's largest sales market, the USA. 26,506 sales in June meant a plus of 8.6 percent and contributed to a half-year plus of 6.8 percent with a total of 151,624 sales. Those responsible will expect stronger growth here in the second half of the year, as the new C-Class will not be introduced in the United States until September.

Popular Mercedes compact models

Such a momentum is also expected in China. In the Middle Kingdom, too, the C-Class will only be on the market in the ninth month. In the course of the year to date, the company has already achieved an increase of 37.5 percent with 135,975 units sold, but is still well behind the two premium competitors Audi and BMW. Audi sold 50,756 units in China in June alone.

Almost a quarter of all sales in the first half of the year (215,205) were in the compact models of the A, B, CLA or GLA class. 130,464 E-Classes were sold as sedans or T-models, ensuring an increase of 25 percent. The S-Class is also in great demand with 49,262 units. One year after the start of production, the 100,000th luxury vehicle rolled off the assembly line.

Waiting for the new Smart

In contrast, Smart is eagerly awaiting the introduction of the new generation. 46,816 units of the Fortwo have been sold since the beginning of the year, a decrease of 9.7 percent. The new generation will be presented in Berlin on July 16, but the market launch has to be waited until the end of the year. (AG / TF)
