Hyundai has taken the i10 to a new level both technically and visually. The smallest car surprises with its smoothness.
By Thomas Flehmer In the
past, Hyundai's small car series was reminiscent of the three musketeers - at least with his name. However, the Atos is long past and the new successor i10 has outgrown the age of cloaks and swords. While the Atos was still fighting for popularity, the new generation of the i10 is now fighting the grandees around VW Up and the like in the fight for market share. And the chances are not exactly slim.
Hyundai i10 sold almost 100,000 times in Germany
Because the i10, which has found almost 100,000 buyers in Germany since its market launch in 2008, has become very mature. Even the visual appearance does not necessarily remind you of a small car at first glance. The hexagonal grill is the typical trademark of the Koreans, in combination with the LED daytime running lights and the headlights, the front looks cute, the sideline gives the 3.67 meter long mini car a sporty appearance.
Even the interior can hardly be assigned to the small car league. The freshly colored materials used create a good atmosphere right from the start. In contrast to earlier times, the number of instruments has been limited and is easy to use. The seats are comfortable, but also provide the necessary lateral support.
Cramped conditions in the Hyundai i10
While the two people in the front are not aware of any space problems, the people sitting in the back should not necessarily exceed 1.78 meters to avoid being claustrophobic. Because despite five doors, the body has to be turned a bit when getting in and out.
Although the i10, which shares the technical platform with the Kia Picanto, has grown up, it still remains a small car. The trunk compartment with its 252 liters, which can be expanded to 1046, can also be described as cute - two trolleys and the space is tight.
Quiet three-cylinder in the Hyundai i10
The two available engines have also grown up. The one-liter three-cylinder has 48.5 kW / 67 hp and can reach a top speed of 155 km / h. The surprising thing is that the three-cylinder no longer sounds like three-cylinder. The five-door drives very smoothly over the asphalt, even if the maximum torque is only applied at 3500 rpm. But the insulation keeps the noise out.
In addition, the chassis has been optimized and damper and spring units have been repositioned. A wheelbase lengthened to 2.39 meters helps ensure that the i10 doesn't necessarily feel like you're in a small car. Hyundai specifies consumption as 4.7 liters, so it has to be proven in everyday life how much gasoline really flows through the hoses.
Heated steering wheel on request for the Hyundai i10
0.2 liters more are the 20 PS more powerful four-cylinder with 1.2 liters displacement, which can keep up with up to 175 km / h on the motorway. With a sprint time of 12.3 seconds, the larger i10 is more agile from the start, even if the three-cylinder engine showed no weakness for its size on winding country roads. But if you want to cover longer distances with the smallest Hyundai, you should choose the model with four pots.
Then, however, 12,120 euros have to be invested, since the 1.2 only starts in the third of a total of four equipment variants "Trend". Then, however, the driver can warm his hands on the steering wheel in cold seasons. In general, the two highest variants "Trend" and "Style" come with LED daytime running lights, Hill start assist or air conditioning, cornering lights and light alloy rims elements are used that are otherwise at home in higher segments.
Well-equipped basic version of the Hyundai i10
Who can do without bells and whistles starts with the "bare" three-cylinder, on which, according to Hyundai, 66 percent of the 13,000 customers expected for 2013 are set, already at 9950 euros and 440 euros cheaper than the predecessor.
Then ABS, ESP, airbags, power steering or tire control systems and on-board computers are already on board. There is also a five-year guarantee. Elements that are on the surcharge list for other representatives of the segment and thus sharp blades in the battle for market share - even without current memories of the musketeers.
