According to the will of the federal states, participants in illegal car races are to face imprisonment in the future. The Federal Ministry of Transport reacts skeptically to a corresponding bill.
Lethal illegal car races should be able to bring speeders to prison according to the will of the federal states. As a stronger deterrent, participants in such races should face up to two years in prison - and even up to ten years if someone is seriously injured or killed. This is provided for in a draft law that the Bundesrat will bring to the Bundestag following a resolution on Friday. So far, such races have been fined EUR 400 and a month's driving ban.
Parliament must now deal with the advance of the countries. The Federal Ministry of Transport had already shown skepticism and indicated that the existing legal situation was sufficient. Federal Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) recently said that it was important to intensify police checks.
Life-threatening trend sport
The North Rhine-Westphalian Justice Minister Thomas Kutschaty (SPD) spoke of a “life-threatening trend sport”. At the meeting of the regional chamber, he said: "In North Rhine-Westphalia alone there were 230 reported illegal car races in the past year." In the future, the driver's license should also be withdrawn and would then have to be renewed. Finally, if convicted, the vehicles could also be taken away for a longer period of time. The initiative originally brought in by North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse provided for up to three years' imprisonment or fines for participants in illegal races.
In the deliberations of the Federal Council committees, this was then reduced to up to two years imprisonment or a fine. Participation in such races should be upgraded from an administrative offense to a criminal offense. The federal states justify the move by stating that the sanctions that have been threatened so far have proven to be inadequate. "They hardly have a strong deterrent effect." There are repeated illegal car races on German roads. Several people were killed or seriously injured on highways or in cities. (dpa)
