The car manufacturer Mercedes is selling more cars again. In August the Swabians were able to continue their race to catch up in a difficult year so far.

In the previous month, the carmaker sold 177,819 cars from its master brand Mercedes-Benz, 14 percent more than in the weak month of the previous year, as the Dax group announced on Friday in Stuttgart. Above all in Germany (+24.3 percent) and, as already known, in the USA, Mercedes was able to grow, and China also continued to improve. In the Chinese market, the increase was almost 13 percent with over 60,000 vehicles.

After eight months, after a difficult start to the year, Mercedes still saw a 0.7 percent drop in sales to 1.50 million cars. In particular, the introduction of new models in the compact classes had a negative impact in the first half of the year, and new versions of SUVs and problems with the start of production in the USA had reduced sales. In August, sales of city SUVs picked up again for the first time this year.

New record in sales

Including the small car brand Smart, Daimler's passenger car sales were 1.58 million vehicles up to the end of August, one percent down on the previous year. Smart is also gaining a foothold again after weak months and increased sales in the previous month to 11,161 vehicles, which corresponds to an increase of almost 32 percent. In the course of the year so far, however, there is still a minus of almost six percent.

"August was the second month in a row for Mercedes-Benz in which we were able to record a new record in global sales," said Britta Seeger, Head of Sales. Demand for the compact class models at Mercedes was particularly positive, increasing by almost 29 percent. In addition, there were also growth rates for the popular SUVs, whose sales increased for the first time this year due to the model change. 61,800 units of the GLA, GLC, GLC Coupé, GLE, GLE Coupé, GLS and the G-Class were sold, an increase of 8.7 percent.
