Saab continues to face an uncertain future. The Chinese consortium National Electric Vehicle Sweden as the owner of the Swedish car manufacturer has now applied to the court for an extension of bankruptcy protection.

The owners of the ailing car maker Saab have asked a Swedish court for even more time to rescue the company. The Chinese consortium National Electric Vehicle Sweden (Nevs) applied for a further extension of bankruptcy protection on Thursday. It was only in December that the court granted the Saab owners a three-month delay. The deadline for Nevs to present new investors is March 2nd.

Belts in Trollhättan stand still

In Trollhättan, Sweden, no cars have rolled off the assembly line since last May. The restructuring of the company, which owes its suppliers almost half a billion Swedish kronor (around 53 million euros), has been going on since August. According to its own information, Nevs has long been negotiating with two large Asian car manufacturers.

Part of the new court motion is a proposal to repay some of the debt, Nevs said.

A committee of creditors supported the extension, said court-appointed administrator Lars Eric Gustafsson. A week ago, Nevs had asked some of the creditors for debt relief in order to bring negotiations with the automakers to a close. (dpa)
