The success of electromobility is also determined by the charging infrastructure. Not only are there currently too few charging stations, but there is also a lack of a uniform payment system. That is why Jaguar relies on a solution from Plugsurfing.
For example, drivers of an electric car need a large number of charging cards in order to be able to charge their electric car safely and without problems - or they have to authorize themselves via an app. Anyone who has ever experienced this while looking for a charging station is extremely annoyed.

Manufacturers are also aware of this problem. With a view to the market launch of upcoming electric cars, they want to make life easier for their customers. There will not be free electricity like Tesla once did, but you will be able to use thousands of charging stations across Europe with just one card.
11,000 stations can be used in Germany
Jaguar is now also promising its customers who choose an I-Pace, which will be available from August. To this end, the British car manufacturer has signed a contract with the provider Plugsurfing. It enables I-Pace drivers to charge their Jaguar at 11,000 charging stations in Germany. There are an average of three charging points at these charging stations. However, only around 440 charging points allow charging with up to 100 kW. There are even more than 60,000 charging stations across Europe, reports Jaguar Germany boss Johannes Kasper van der Stelt.
Jaguar drivers can pay at these charging stations either via app or via RFID chid. “At the same time, our offer includes free charging for 30 minutes,” adds van der Stelt. After that, the valid tariffs will be used. The monthly fee for this charging service is EUR 38.50 per month. "With our offer, we give our customers the reassuring feeling of being able to fill up at the charging stations from Plugsurfing, who work with different providers," says the head of Germany.
Charges to 80 percent in 40 minutes
The 90 kW lithium-ion battery can be charged from 0 to 80 percent in 40 minutes at a fast charging station with an output of 100 kW with direct current. If you don't want to invest this time, you can get 100 kilometers of range back into the batteries in 15 minutes. Incidentally, the total range of the I-Pace is 480 kilometers.
But why does Jaguar only charge with 100 kW? The Audi e-tron, which will be launched at the end of the year, can be charged with 150 kW? “Because when we developed the I-Pace, we had Tesla as the benchmark. Hence the 100 kW charging capacity,”says Wolfgang Ziebart, technical director and father of the I-Pace. "We didn't have a higher charging capacity on our radar back then."
Increased charging capacity possible
Ziebart does not want to rule out the possibility that there will also be more charging power with the I-Pace in the medium term. But that is currently not an issue. If it were up to the battery cells alone, this would not be a problem. They would be able to handle 170 kW even if such a power was not exhausted. The problem for no higher charging power lies in the connector to the control unit of the battery.
It simply cannot handle a charging power of 150 kW. When these plugs are all installed, you can think about a few more kW. For the time being, however, the I-Pace customer has to be modest with the 100 kW - and thus hang on the charging station a few minutes longer than he might like.
