General Motors wants to tackle everyday traffic in Manhattan with a fleet of autonomous Chevrolet Bolt. The engineers rely on bad weather and the aggressive driving style of the locals.
General Motors wants to be the first automaker to test robotic cars in New York. At the beginning of next year, a fleet of self-driving electric cars from the Chevrolet Bolt brand - the gene donor of the Opel Ampera-e - will be launched in Manhattan to the south.
High-precision maps are currently being created in an area of around 13 square kilometers, said the head of the GM robot vehicle division Cruise, Kyle Vogt, the "Wall Street Journal" on Tuesday. The car company bought the start-up Cruise in the spring of 2016 and bundled its robot car development under its roof.
Software improvements
So far, around 100 converted Bolt have been on the road, including in San Francisco. General Motors and Cruise want to gain specific experience in the metropolitan area with heavy traffic. In New York, there would be worse weather and a more aggressive driving style, "which will improve our software much faster," said Vogt. Cruise will also open a research location in the city.
In New York, too, a person should initially be behind the wheel so that he can intervene if necessary. The test in the harsh New York environment could, however, take a big step towards completely autonomous robot taxis in the city, which various providers want to bring to the streets in a few years. Most auto and tech companies test their self-driving vehicles on the quieter streets of California. (dpa)
