Opel is continuing its product offensive. The Rüsselsheim-based company is bringing two new engines onto the market - with Euro 6d-Temp, of course.

After the headlines about raids by the Frankfurt public prosecutor's office for alleged diesel cheating, which Opel denies, the Rüsselsheim-based company is now sending the brand new 1.6-liter diesel in the Astra (from 27,720 euros) and the same-sized, refreshed Insignia turbo gasoline engine (from 35,195 Euro) two new engines with the latest Euro 6d-Temp standard are launched.

Initially on a 600-kilometer test drive with the diesel: An SCR catalytic converter with urea injection, which guarantees a good environmental conscience at all times and also outside the test stand, that is what Opel promises for the in-line four-cylinder. The buyer can be sure that the 150 hp diesel in the Astra offers an unlimited fun guarantee.

Powerful drive in the Astra

The machine starts right after the start with almost no delay, as if an electric motor were providing propulsion. The maximum torque of 350 Newton meters is available early and without sagging, the turbo support is tailor-made for this drive package. If you like diesel - yes, there is still a reason - you will also find the subtle humming of the engine pleasant.

The six-speed switch increases the joy of propulsion. Shifting diligently through the Croatian hinterland and on coastal roads, the right gears are always ready for dynamic progress. Only at speeds above 170 km / h is it a bit slower on the motorway. But who wants to reach the maximum 225 km / h? It is more important that the Astra is always full, loyal and problem-free on the road and runs impeccably straight ahead.

The diesel Astra is not a litter - but there are other brands for that in the PSA Group. And braking is also very German and straight to the point. What also excites with this Opel: Despite robbing bends on the coast, the new engine skimpy under the six-liter threshold. If you drive more cautiously, less is certainly possible in the long run. The many grave diggers of the diesel engine should now and then remember this austerity of consumption and emissions.

Also insignia with good dynamics

With the second completely overhauled engine, the 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 200 hp, such consumption values are naturally not quite achievable. On the dynamic front, however, the turbo direct injection gasoline engine is already close to the biturbo diesel. The maximum torque of 280 Newton meters is already available from 1,650 and up to 4,500 revolutions and the pull can also be felt in the larger Insignia unit carrier. Only when accelerating quickly from 60 to 100 does the driver notice a certain effort with the 1.8-ton vehicle.

The limousine sprints from zero to 100 km / h in 7.7 seconds and the top speed of 235 km / h is reached quickly. It goes without saying that the standard consumption of 6.6 liters remains illusory during fast sprints with the six-speed manual transmission or the six-speed automatic. But it also works smoothly. Then there is at least a seven before the decimal point.

Motorized, the Insignia also inspires as a petrol engine (with a particle filter, by the way) thanks to its perfectly balanced and agile chassis even on bends and turns - the almost five-meter block is much more compact. It also offers an all-round full range as a petrol engine. So it's actually just a shame that the two new engines will also be buried with the foreseeable departure from the GM platforms for Astra and Insignia. Until then, they should still bring a lot of joy to buyers who enjoy value for money. (SP-X)
