According to the new TomTom Traffic Index, supposed abbreviations often do not produce the desired result. In addition, the latest research nullified an old rule of thumb.
Alleged abbreviations do not always lead to the goal faster. According to the fourth edition of the TomTom Traffic Index, the traffic loads on the so-called subordinate road network, which includes federal and country roads, as well as inner-city secondary roads, are mostly much higher than on main roads. This could surprise you with traffic jams that are not necessarily reported via the traffic information. At the same time, there is a lack of adequate alternative routes on the subordinate routes.
"Traditional measures to counter the high traffic load, such as building new or expanding existing roads, are no longer proving to be effective enough," says Harold Goddijn. The TomTom boss is therefore calling for "real-time traffic information to help drivers find the quickest shortcut on their route."
Traffic congestion in Germany decreased
Last year, Germany put an exclamation mark on the index. It was the only country where traffic has decreased. Since economic growth was recorded in 2013, the rule of thumb "economic growth leads to higher traffic loads" was refuted.
The cities with the highest traffic loads remain Stuttgart, Hamburg and Berlin. The journey here takes 29, 28 and 27 percent longer than if traffic were to flow unhindered. In all three metropolises, pollution decreased by four, three and two percent compared to the previous year. Munich climbed to fourth place in the ranking with 26 percent, as the load there had increased by two percent, while the previous fourth Cologne the load decreased by three percent.
Moscow defends top position
In the global ranking of more than 160 measured cities, Moscow was able to defend its first place from 2012. In the Russian capital, the journey time is 74 percent longer. Istanbul follows with 62 percent, ahead of Rio de Janeiro with 55 percent. (AG)
