Honda will cease production at its UK facility in Swindon from 2021. 150,000 cars are produced there annually.

The company announced on Tuesday. The Swindon facility is Honda's only manufacturing facility in Europe. The factory with 3,500 employees is scheduled to stop working in 2021. The UK's departure from the EU on March 29 was not the reason for the decision, it said.

It is about a restructuring of the global manufacturing network in order to concentrate more on electric cars. Honda is another Japanese company that is scaling back its UK operations.

Honda Civic is produced in Swindon

Nissan recently announced that the next generation of its X-Trail SUV model for the European market will be built in Japan instead of England. They want to merge the production of the X-Trail in the Kyushu plant. Japan's number 1 Toyota, when asked, said it had no plans to change its UK operations. The group purchases parts for car production in Derbyshire from mainland Europe. A no-deal Brexit could make production at the British Toyota location more difficult.

Honda's Swindon plant in southern England produces 150,000 cars a year, including the Civic. The factory accounts for around 10 percent of total UK car production. Honda began manufacturing engines there in 1989. Cars have been rolling off the production line there since 1992. Honda's decision to close the plant comes shortly after a free trade agreement between the EU and Japan came into force. Corporations like Honda will benefit as the 10 percent tariffs on cars imported from Japan will be removed from 2027. (dpa)
