Mercedes bundles the development and production for fuel cell vehicles in Canada. The car manufacturer has the relevant components manufactured in Vancouver.
In future, Mercedes-Benz will produce fuel cells for electric cars in Vancouver, Canada. The company is building its own production facility for this purpose on around 2,000 square meters. After a short test phase, the start of series production is planned for 2013.
Fuel cells with higher efficiency
The fuel cells that are then manufactured should not only be characterized by higher performance and efficiency, but above all by a compact design, so that, according to the manufacturer, they can also be used in sedans such as the Mercedes C-Class or E-Class. The current generation of fuel cells is used for test purposes in the compact Mercedes B-Class and the Citaro Fuel Cell-Hybrid city bus.
“In order to further expand our leading role in the field of alternative drives, we ensure direct access to the decisive key technologies. As with the systematic development of our battery expertise with Deutsche Accumotive GmbH, this decision is another important step towards securing expertise on the way to emission-free driving,”said Herbert Kohler, Head of e-Drive and Future Mobility.
With the B-Class F-CELL, Daimler has been producing its first electric vehicle with fuel cells under series production conditions since the end of 2009. Currently, three of these cars are on a world tour over 30,000 kilometers to prove the everyday suitability of this technology. (AG / mid)
