The Mirai, which has been available since December, is developing better than expected. Toyota will therefore triple production of the fuel cell car in the next two years.

Toyota is increasing production of the Mirai due to higher than expected demand. Almost 1,500 orders have already been received for the fuel cell car, which has been available in Japan since mid-December. The manufacturer itself had only expected 400 units for 2015. The high proportion of private customers is also noticeable here. After all, 40 percent of private households have ordered a vehicle that only emits water vapor.

Goal 2017: 3000 Toyota Mirai per year

Toyota has therefore set production at 700 units for the current year, with 2000 vehicles to roll off the production line in the coming year, and another 1000 units more in 2017.

The Mirai - the Japanese word for future - will be coming to Germany in September 2015. The price for the first series model with a fuel cell drive starts at 78,540 euros. The almost missing infrastructure with only a few hydrogen filling stations is a hindrance to the market in Germany.

In Japan the infrastructure is more advanced. There the Mirai is offered for seven million yen, the equivalent of around 52,500 euros. In the US, the car costs only 36,000 euros due to government subsidies. (AG / TF)
